Laban's 4 Movement Components & 8 Efforts

Image
I   Unit: Laban's Movement Components Theme: Efforts Introduction   Laban categorized human movement into four component parts: Direction, Weight, Speed & Flow. Each component has two qualities. Direction can be direct or indirect. Weight can be heavy or light. Speed can be fast or slow. Flow can be bound or free. These components and ther qualities we have indirectly addressed in class. Laban also identified 8 efforts in movement. Laban named these Effort qualities: Floating, Dabbing, Wringing, Thrusting, Pressing, Flicking, Slashing, and Gliding . Laban identified these Efforts by breaking down movement into what he called the Motion Factors of Weight, Time and Space.     II    Learning Objectives Understand the embodiment of movement Explain the relationship between movement components and efforts Gather awareness of how these movements influence your work  Experience the integration of these concepts with your dance   III ...

It goes from bound (limited, constrained, with defined beginning and end), to free (open, in restricted continuous).    II Learning Objectives    Understand the concept of flow Explain how it applies to dance Gather an awareness of the  universal quality of flow Experience both, bound and free flow, as you put them together in a group phrase.   III Warm Up Stretching Tai Chi   IV  Main Lesson   1 Video  https://youtu.be/JtGtqmC5wU4   Question 1 Make a comment about the universal quality of flow     2   FLOW A Dictionary of Theatre Anthropology by Eugenio Barba.  (Pg. 118)  Question 2 Go to pg. 118, middle c...

Free Flow

Image
I   Unit: Flow Theme: Free Flow  Introduction   As a factor, flow is about emotion, stability, durability, evolution and emotional immersion. Flow is the starting point of effort. It is in charge of the ongoing stability of all motions. Without any flow movement will be contained to one area or space. It will be contained to only one motion. This makes flow very important to movement as a whole. Flow also allows movement to show emotions. It is the expressive and repressive part of movement.      II     Learning Objectives      Explain how flow is illustrated in a dance video Understand the importance of free flow for dance Gain an awareness of the way free flow feels in the body Experience free flow through movement III Main Lesson 1  Video   13 Free Bound Flow Question 1 Write your reflection about the movement performed in this video. ----------------------------------------  2 Free flow  is some...

Laban's Cube

Image
I   Unit: Space and Relationship Theme: Laban's Cube Introduction   Dancers interact with space in myriad ways. They may stay in one place or they may travel from one place to another. They may alter the direction and level.  The use of space in a dance is considered the design of the movements and choreography, and also pertains to its location onstage . Laban cube laban icosahedron. This very precise geometry is also the supporting structure for our personal interactions, defining personal space and body. -------------------------------- II Learning Objectives   Understand the meaning of the kinesphere within Laban's cube Explain how the design of movement within the cube influences your movement abilities and choice Gain an awareness of the possible  locomotive advantages generated by the cube Experience movement language through a choreographed movement phrase III Main Lesson 1 Movement Exploration  Question 1 Write a reflection on your e...

Weight

Image
Unit: Extra-daily Techniques   Theme: Weight    I   Introduction Weight is about sensing one’s body mass in relation to the pull of gravity.  Using this experience to explore its expressive potential within a dance or movement proposition allows the dance/movement artist to diversify the choreographic frame. Using Rudolf Laban’s Effort concepts as a springboard, we will explore three weight qualities: Resiliency, Strength, and Lightness. II  Learning Objectives   Understand the fundamental principles of weight Explain the necessity of weight to move Gain an awareness of the role that weight plays in dance making   III  Main Lesson     1 Warm Up/ Stretching   Relenti / Philip Glass Music   2 Concepts     Resiliency   Sensing one's weight in relation to the vertical point of gravity.
