Unit: Elements of Dance
Theme: Energy
Introduction
Energy moves us and we move it. Without energy dance cannot happen. It is a matter of how much energy we put into it. There is always energy even when we seem not to move. Today we will explore soft and sustain versus fast, sharp and quick enrgy.
----------------------------------
Question 2
Why is energy important in dance?
Movement that is smooth and even; it is the result of a steady equalized release of energy that excludes any perceptible accent, sharp initiation, or sudden cessation.

1.
Reflect on the experience and write about it.
- n/a
2. Why is energy important in dance?
- Dance without this concept of energetic input would just be a
sequence of movements - energetic input is how we infuse deeper layers of
meaning into movement.
3. What did you observe? Explain.
- The first video was very interesting, seeing such effective martial/physical representations of these animal archetypes. The second video looked like a relatively standard tai chi practice, to my untrained eye. I wouldn't have independently made the connection between martial arts and dance, but now it seems obvious.
4. Compare and contrast the movement in video 1 and 2 in terms of smooth
sustained and sudden sharp changes.
- The first video, while being primarily focused on more
combative, sharp movements, still incorporates moments of softness and
smoothness. The second video is more exclusively focused on smooth motion, and
seems to be more focused on introspective energetic flow than external
combat.
5. How would you describe this dance choreography in terms of energy?
- The word that immediately comes to mind is "fierce".
In specific terms of sharp vs. smooth, they make use of each in good
balance.
